Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes are for adults who are already proficient in the English language, but wish to improve their basic reading, writing, and math skills. Reading and writing are integrated to give students the foundation for effective communication. Reading instruction emphasizes comprehension, vocabulary development, critical thinking, and study skills. Writing skills include the review and application of language and grammar rules, correct usage and spelling, writing sentences and paragraphs. Students learn to use writing as a mode of personal expression, as a valuable learning tool, and as a necessary skill when getting a job, earning a living, or pursuing further education.
Math instruction includes skills development in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, and introduction to algebra and geometry.
We have classes which are designed for the high school graduate who needs to brush up on reading, writing, and math skills before applying to a community or technical college. Skills emphasized will help students prepare for any placement test such as the COMPASS.
All of our class outcomes are tied to the Washington State Learning Standards found here: http://www.sbctc.ctc.edu/college/_e-abe_learningstandards.aspx. For more specifics on what will be taught in each class, our course outlines can be found here: https://sites.google.com/a/seattlecentral.edu/btsd/abe/abe-course-outlines.

External Diploma Program
The External Diploma Program is a unique high school diploma program for adults who have acquired high school level skills through life experience. Over 6,000 adults nationwide have earned high school diplomas through the External Diploma Program.
EDP offers an individualized and flexible program schedule for adults who usually have work and family commitments. The average length of the program is six months.
EDP is an assessment and diploma awarding program. Therefore, no "class-time" is involved. Adults successfully demonstrate high school level abilities in a series of assessment tasks completed at home and in private EDP office visits.
Who is Eligible for EDP?
The External Diploma Program is designed for mature, self-directed adults without a GED or high school diploma. Adults must be at least 21 years old to enter the program.
Most of the adults enrolled in the EDP already have strong basic skills and significant work or homemaking experiences.
How to Enter the External Degree Program:
